South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. will launch a training program to groom 10,000 young software engineers as part of its ambitious 180 trillion won ($158 billion) investment plan to contribute to boosting employment and areas for future growth in the country.

In August, the country’s largest conglomerate pledged to spend 180 trillion won over the next three years to ramp up its memory capacity, create 700,000 new jobs and nurture emerging industries, including artificial intelligence and fifth-generation wireless networks. More than 70 percent of that investment will be made at home. The announcement came after the company’s de facto chief Jay Y. Lee met with President Moon Jae-in, who has been battling with the worst job market since the global financial crisis.

Samsung SW Academy for Youth will provide 10,000 young jobseekers software education programs including customized coding training as well as employment consulting and a monthly stipend of 1 million won per person. The company will start receiving applications from Oct. 22 to Nov. 2. Four-year college graduates aged 29 and younger can apply for the program at www.SSAFY.com.

The recruitment process will include an online aptitude test for software development and a final interview. It is expected to be completed in November as the training begins on Dec. 10.

The one-year program will run in two semesters, with each semester to consist of five months of basic training and a month devoted to job fair. High-performing trainees would have the opportunity to visit Samsung Electronics’ research facilities overseas. They would also be able to take Samsung’s software test to assess their software capability.
