Mercedes-Benz, the top seller in the Korean import car maker, initiated construction to expand its auto parts distribution center in Korea amid growing popularity of its vehicles in the country.

Mercedes-Benz Korea, the local unit of German automaker Mercedes-Benz, on Monday broke ground for a bigger, new cutting-edge logistics facility in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, in the presence of Dimitris Psillakis, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz Korea.

The German car brand successfully kept its lead among major foreign brands for five consecutive months in May after selling more than 5,800 cars in Korea.

To ramp up its storage capacity by 35 percent to 60,000 auto parts, Mercedes-Benz Korea will invest 35 billion won ($32.5 million) to expand the logistics facility on a larger land of 30,500 square meters, almost doubled from the current area of 17,800 square meters. The construction will be completed by March 2019, according to the automaker.

The new logistics center will help improve the customer satisfaction by stably supplying auto parts and curtailing the long lead time for follow-up services, an official at Mercedes-Benz said. It also is planning to hire 50 more workers to benefit the local community and the economy.
