LG Electronics Inc.`s CLOi CartBot.
South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. has become responsible for supplying a fleet of autonomous shopping carts for the country’s leading discount retail store chain E-Mart Inc.
Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin earlier this year vowed to introduce robotic shopping carts in grocery stores under the conglomerate within three years.
LG Electronics said Monday that it entered into an agreement with E-Mart on cooperating to develop a customer service robot and related technology. Under the agreement, they will first work together to develop the so-called smart shopping cart that slides alongside shoppers.
The development of the smart shopping cart will be led by LG Electronics’ robotics research institute, which has been supplying guide robots at the Incheon International Airport, the country’s main gateway, stores of bakery chain Paris Croissant Co.
The electronics maker recently has been pushing hard to ramp up its robot business. Early this year, it launched LG CLOi brand for its robots and has introduced eight different types of robots including CLOi GuideBot for customer guide service, CLOi CleanBot for cleaning floors, and CLOi SuitBot - exoskeleton suit for helping workers lift heavy objects.
