South Korea’s GS Retail Co., supermarket and convenience store operating unit of GS Group, said Tuesday its supermarket unit GS Supermarket saw a 48 percent on-year jump in sales in Indonesia from Aug. 18 to Sep. 2 thanks to the 2018 Asian Games.
The surge in sales was largely driven by Korean food products that were actively sought after by visitors to the international sports Games who were also fans of K-pop music. In particular, the medal haul of Korean athletes on top of huge popularity of K-pop culture further pushed up its sales, the company explained. Among all items, instant noodle ramyeon sales rose the largest at 72 percent, followed by beverages at 56 percent and snacks at 39 percent.
GS Retail established GS Supermarket’s Indonesian operations in June 2014 and opened its first store in Bogor, Indonesia, in October 2016. It now runs five outlets in the country, which have various indoor facilities such as food courts and kids play zones.
“GS Supermarket stores in Indonesia usually deliver 10 to 30 percent larger revenue compared with local peers in the country,” said an official at GS Retail, adding that the Korean retail operator’s goal is to become the top retail company in Indonesia by serving differentiated, upgraded products and services.
