The popularity of Big Bang’s leader G-Dragon (GD), South Korea’s famous boy group from YG Entertainment Inc., is boosting sales of Shinsegae Duty Free, which opened its door last month in Myeong-dong, one of the most bustling streets in central Seoul.
It is said that foreign tourists are flocking into YG Entertainment Store in the duty free shop to snatch up plush toy dolls and other character products featuring GD.
GD-featuring merchandises take up the lion’s share of 49 percent of the entire YG Store sales. YG Store is also selling products of its apparel brand NONA9ON and cosmetics brand Moonshot, catering to foreign fans of YG’s celebrities.
Items related to the heartthrob GD are flying off the shelves. GD featuring stuffed toys were sold out in just two weeks after the launch of the shop and special box packages of Moonshot’s male skincare products with his picture on them were all snapped up by Chinese and Japanese fans.
Shinsegae expects that having him in its advertisement campaign would further boost its sales as he is attracting many Asian fans enthralled by him to Korea. An official from Shinsegae said that there are even some tourists who flew to Korea just to buy merchandises featuring him.
