Impeached South Korean President Park Geun-hye gets a heavy sentence of 24 years in prison and a penalty of 18 billion won ($17 million) in the first ruling on Friday with a Seoul court placing the former president guilty of 16 counts out of 18 charges including power abuse and bribery in collaboration with her clandestine friend Choi Soon-sil. Park, the first daughter of former longest-serving president Park Chung Hee to become Korea’s first female president was disgraced and impeached after the explosive scandal about her sharing elected power with a confidential friend and inner circle. Park who denies any wrongdoing and boycotted the trial proceedings was also absent from the final hearing.
