ETRI develops microserver with 10-fold greater density and extremely low power consumption

Korean researchers have developed a new microserver that features drastically reduced volume and extremely low power consumption.

The ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute), one of Korea’s state think tanks, said on Wednesday its research team successfully localized a low-power microserver dubbed Kosmos whose density is 10-fold greater than conventional servers. Demand for high density and low power computing servers has been increasing to store and handle a huge amount of data generated from IoT sensors and big data technology.

One typical server frame measuring width of 48 centimeters and height of 22 centimeters can house a total of 64 Kosmos servers, meaning the packing density increases by more than 10 times from conventional x86 servers.

“The high-density and low-power module server also features easy system management support through a management module as well as on high-speed interserver communication, said the ETRI’s research team, adding "The Kosmos server could have a far-reaching impact on the industry ecosystem, activating the domestic server industry and creating jobs.”

The research institute aims to take leadership in the emerging low-power and high-density server segment in Korea where foreign brands have been dominant.
